<image:title>News - A Mother’s Journey Home - Meet Cordelia and her children. During her time at the Friendship Home, Cordelia was reunited with her children and welcomed her youngest baby into the world. While in our care, Cordelia faced an especially difficult challenge when her newborn was diagnosed with a serious heart condition requiring surgery. Through it all, our staff walked closely alongside her, helping her navigate complex medical decisions and access the care her baby needed. Before coming to MMA, Cordelia was living in her car. Today, through our housing partnership with Vaya Health’s Back@Home program, she is now in stable housing, and her family has been fully reunited. At Mission Ministries Alliance, we have the privilege of serving children and families during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. We believe every child deserves safety, stability, and the opportunity to grow in a nurturing environment. Navigating healthcare, especially during a crisis, can be overwhelming for families experiencing homelessness. That’s why our team walks alongside each family, providing support, advocacy, and care every step of the way. Our case managers are often the unseen heroes, standing in the gap for both mothers and their children as they work toward healing and stability. Cordelia’s story is one of resilience, hope, and the power of community.</image:title>

      <image:title>News - Volunteer Spotlight: A Mother’s Christmas Appeal</image:title>
<image:caption>Meet Hannah and Mike Crouch. Hannah tragically lost her son Jordan to an overdose on August 20, 2024. Jordan was part of our MMA family, and we knew him well. He had a charismatic spirit — one of those people you loved immediately. In her deep grief, God placed a calling on Hannah’s heart to turn pain into purpose. She launched Jordan’s Journey, continuing her son’s legacy through acts of compassion and service. In December 2024, Hannah and Mike began collecting cold-weather items and preparing Christmas candy bags to share love and hope with our unsheltered neighbors. Over the past year, they have served countless hours at MMA — especially at our Agape Stations, where people experiencing homelessness come to shower, eat, and wash clothes. They have provided meals, compassion, and friendship to the most vulnerable in our community. For them, it was never just food or conversation — it was about seeing people, building trust, and loving them right where they are. In loving those who struggle like Jordan did, Hannah has found a way to continue loving her son. Because of this calling, Jordan’s Journey continues to gather support from their church family, their community, and even supporters across multiple states. They collect jackets, socks, blankets, hats, food, and other essentials for our Code Purple shelter and outreach programs — and they show up as the hands and feet of Jesus. Not long after Jordan’s passing, Hannah asked a question no mother should ever have to ask: “Did you share the Gospel with Jordan?” We were able to assure her that every day he was with us, we prayed with him, encouraged him, and reminded him that he was loved by Christ — a love too often withheld from those living unsheltered. Hannah and Mike serve faithfully every week, greeting each person with dignity and compassion. Jesus said, “Go out and bring them in,” and Hannah and Mike live out that calling with humility and grace. We are incredibly grateful for their hearts, for their commitment to honoring Jordan through service, and for the way they continue to transform sorrow into hope. Through their mission, Jordan’s legacy lives on — touching lives, inspiring faith, and sharing love in the places it is needed most.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Our Neighbors Without Shelter: A Call for Compassion What the Point-in-Time Count Reveals About Homelessness in McDowell - MMA Board Chair, Debora Workman, and Board Member, Becky Young, joined volunteers at the recent Point-in-Time Count to help ensure every neighbor experiencing homelessness was counted.</image:title>
<image:caption>This summer, Mission Ministries Alliance hosted the Point-in-Time Count for McDowell County. The results were sobering. 106 individuals were counted living in places not meant for human habitation—a 43% increase compared to the winter count, when 74 individuals were recorded, including those who had a safe place to rest in our overnight shelter. On the night of the summer count, both of our program shelters were at full capacity. The Friendship Home for Women and Children sheltered 37 women and children, while the John Thompson Center for Men provided housing for 18 men. These beds were full, but the need extended far beyond what we could offer. Sometimes, when people see homelessness, they assume those individuals are “not from here.” But through this count, we interviewed each person—and the truth is, the majority have lived in McDowell County most of their lives. They are not strangers. They are our neighbors, classmates, coworkers, and friends who have fallen on hard times. The increase we are seeing is not just about housing—it is about the lack of timely access to mental health and substance use treatment. Too often, people wait weeks or months for an appointment, even when they are ready for help today. By the time the system is ready, they may have lost hope. This revolving door leaves many people stuck outside, disconnected from care and community. At Mission Ministries Alliance, we believe compassion must be at the heart of every response. Housing is critical, but without grace-filled, trauma-informed, and recovery-centered care, even housing solutions can fall short. That is why we train our staff not just in best practices, but in the practice of compassion. Recovery principles are woven into every part of our work—because we know healing happens when people are seen, valued, and treated with dignity. How You Can Help We are calling on our community to support in whatever way you can. Times are uncertain, with federal and state funds being cut more each week, and we know the road ahead will depend on the strength of our local community. You can make a difference by: Volunteering your time at one of our shelters or community programs Committing to become a monthly donor, helping sustain this vital work Dropping off supplies to meet the daily needs of our residents Every act of generosity, no matter how big or small, helps us keep moving this mission forward. If you’d like to get involved, please reach out to me directly at crystal.sweatt@m3life.org. Together, we can ensure that no one in McDowell County is left without compassion, care, or hope.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - The HPWNC: A Project for Recovery, Stability, and Hope - Launched in 2022, The Homeless Project of Western North Carolina began with a bold yet compassionate mission: to meet individuals where they are, support them through their most difficult moments, and walk with them on the path to recovery and stability. Three years later, the impact is clear. We’ve connected over 130 individuals to vital, life-changing services—including peer support, emergency shelter, treatment programs, and health care. These efforts are delivering measurable progress across several areas, particularly in addressing the social determinants of health—such as housing stability, access to care, and substance use recovery.</image:title>

<image:title>News - Mission Ministries Alliance Conducts Annual Point-in-Time Count for McDowell County - Everyone Counts! What is the Point-in-Time (PIT) Count? The Point-in-Time Count is a nationwide effort to collect data on homelessness in local communities, providing a snapshot of individuals experiencing homelessness on a single night. This critical data helps local agencies, policymakers, and service providers better understand the needs of those without stable housing and informs funding, resources, and strategic planning at the state, federal, and agency levels. This year’s Point-in-Time (PIT) Count was a true community effort, with the support of several partner organizations dedicated to improving the well-being of our neighbors. A huge thank you to McDowell Access to Care and Health (MATCH) for their unwavering commitment to McDowell County as an overall resource navigator, Vaya Health for expanding access to housing, and Foothills Food Hub for ensuring nutritious food access for those in need. Appreciation also goes to Freedom Life Ministries for supporting individuals in reentry, Centro Unido for providing culturally inclusive services for Hispanic and Latino communities, and the Western Piedmont Council of Government. These partners played a vital role in delivering direct services and resources, contributing to the health, wellness, and stability of individuals experiencing homelessness in McDowell County. Preliminary data from the PIT Count shows: ➡ 74 individuals were found living in unsheltered locations throughout McDowell County—places not meant for human habitation such as cars, abandoned buildings, or outdoor encampments. ➡ 35 women and children were sheltered at the Friendship Home, receiving safe housing and supportive services. ➡ 21 men were sheltered at the John Thompson Center for Men, receiving safe housing and supportive services. This data should be alarming for anyone who has a heart for people in our community. The question is often raised: Are people being bused in? The answer is no. In fact, reports and data show that 82% of these individuals are from McDowell County, and 79% report disabling conditions that impact their housing stability. As we reflect on these numbers, let us remember the words of Matthew 25:35—"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in." Addressing homelessness is a shared responsibility, and together, through faith and action, we can make a difference in the lives of one of our most vulnerable, marginalized populations in our county.</image:title>
